Performance isolation is mostly an orchestration problem, not just a storage problem.
3. What billing metrics should we expose to customers?
At minimum, expose stored GB-month, object count, request volume, egress, backup footprint, and restore events. If analytics or ETL workloads are material, add derived metrics such as scan volume or processing runs. Customers need to understand which behaviors increase cost and how seasonal peaks affect invoices. Clear metrics reduce disputes and improve trust.
4. How should tenant backups work in a multi-tenant SaaS?
Tenant backups should be independently recoverable, logically partitioned, and tested through real restore drills. A backup is only useful if it can restore a single tenant without affecting the rest of the platform. You should document RPO and RTO per tier, then validate them regularly. Also make sure permissions and metadata are restored correctly, not just the raw objects.
5. When should we move a tenant to dedicated storage isolation?
Move a tenant when their value, compliance requirements, support burden, or traffic pattern justify the added cost. Common triggers include frequent quota exceptions, restore sensitivity, regulatory constraints, and sustained high ingest volumes. Dedicated isolation can also be a premium upsell if you make the value clear. The decision should be based on measurable risk and margin, not guesswork.
6. Is per-tenant account isolation worth the operational overhead?
For enterprise and regulated tenants, yes, often absolutely. It simplifies audits, increases trust, and makes chargeback much easier, though it does add management overhead. For smaller customers, the cost may outweigh the benefit, so shared infrastructure with strong policy controls is usually better. A tiered model lets you reserve account isolation for the customers who will pay for it.
